Probably the first
academic interest in human resource management education occurred in the 1930s,
with the development of business schools. In 1931 there was a material increase
in the number of books on personel management offered to business school instructors
(Stockton, 1932). Nevertheless, most of those books suffered from lack of
management theory and lack of standardized topics. Furthermore, the texts did
not relate the compony’s personnel program to its business, the state of the
firm’s development, or the production and marketing functions. Only two of the
books discussed wage theories, and all but one text ignored the trade union
movement (Stocktom, 1932).
