Every story
has a beginning. With writing, this beginning took place more than 5,000 years
ago when Sumerians invented cuneiform to record good using a wedge-shaped reed
stylus and a moist clay tablet. From this simple beginning, writing has
undergone a incredible metamorphosis. The hardware of writing moved from marks
on clay to marks on paper to marks on computer srcreens. The software of
writing evolved from cuneiform to a wide array of scripts, including
syllabries, logographic forms, and the many variants of the alphabet (Cook,
2003).
